What Is a Skin Lesion Assessment?

A skin lesion assessment is a detailed evaluation of moles, growths, spots, or any new or changing skin marks.

You may benefit from an assessment if you notice:

  • A new mole or growth
  • A mole that has changed in size, shape, or colour
  • A lesion that bleeds, crusts, or doesn’t heal
  • Itching, tenderness, or pain in a skin spot
  • Rough, scaly, or rapidly growing patches
  • A personal or family history of skin cancer

During your consultation, we:

  • Take a detailed medical and sun-exposure history
  • Perform a full skin examination (or focused area review)
  • Use Dermoscopy and Microscopy (magnified skin analysis tools) for enhanced visualization
  • Assess risk factors and determine whether monitoring, biopsy, or removal is required

Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable when detected early.

We screen for:

  • Melanoma
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
  • Actinic Keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions)

We follow the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma:

  • A– Asymmetry
  • B– Border irregularity
  • C– Colour variation
  • D– Diameter larger than 6mm
  • E– Evolving (changing over time)

Regular skin checks are recommended annually, or more frequently for high-risk patients.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, type of lesion, and clinical findings. We offer several safe and effective treatment modalities.

Medical (Non-Surgical) Treatment

Some lesions can be managed with prescription topical medications or medical therapy, including:

  • Topical treatments for actinic keratoses
  • Medical therapy for superficial skin cancers (selected cases)
  • Anti-inflammatory or antibiotic treatments for benign inflammatory lesions

These options are best suited for early, superficial, or low-risk lesions.

Cryosurgery with CryoPen ®

We performed cryosurgery with CryoPen®, an advanced handheld cryotherapy device that uses high-pressure nitrous oxide (N2O) to destroy benign skin lesions with millimetre precision. It treats lesions by freezing intracellular fluid, making it a fast and relatively painless procedure with minimal damage to the surrounded tissue.

Commonly used for:

  • Actinic keratoses
  • Solar lentigo (sun spots) and liver spots
  • Warts
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Other superficial lesions

Benefits:

  • Quick in-office procedure
  • Minimal downtime
  • No stitches required

You may experience mild redness, blistering, or temporary skin lightening after treatment.

Surgical Options

When a lesion is suspicious or confirmed as skin cancer, surgical removal may be recommended.

Options include:

Excision and Surgical Reconstruction

  • Where clinically indicated, the lesion is carefully removed with an appropriate margin of healthy surrounding tissue to ensure complete excision.

In cases where closure requires additional reconstruction, advanced surgical techniques may be used, including skin grafts or local flap reconstruction. These methods are design to restore both function and appearance, achieving the best possible cosmetic outcome.

  • Tissue is sent for histopathology (lab analysis)
  • Stitches may be required
  • All procedures are performed by our Lead Facial Plastic Surgeon, Mr J De Cordova, with a focus on precision, safety, and optima aesthetic results.

Shave Excision

  • Raised lesions are carefully shaved off at skin level to avoid linear scars in visible areas.
  • Suitable for selected benign lesions

Punch Biopsy

  • Small circular blade used to sample suspicious tissue
  • Helps confirm diagnosis before full removal

Surgical management offers the highest cure rate for many skin cancers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • How often should I have a skin cancer screening?

Most adults should have a yearly skin check. High-risk individuals (fair skin, heavy sun exposure, family history, previous skin cancer) may require more frequent screening.

  • Does removal of a mole always mean it is cancer?

No. Many moles are removed as a precaution or for simply cosmetic reasons. The only way to confirm diagnosis is through histopathology after removal.

  • Is cryotherapy painful?

You may feel brief stinging or burning during treatment. Discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.

  • Will there be a scar after surgical removal?

Any surgical procedure can leave a scar. However, we use careful techniques to minimize scarring and achieve the best cosmetic outcome.

  • How do I know if a mole is dangerous?

Follow the ABCDE rule and watch for change. If a mole evolves, becomes irregular, or behaves differently from your other moles (“ugly duckling sign”), it should be assessed.

  • Can skin cancer be cured?

When detected early, most skin cancers are highly treatable and often curable.

  • Is skin cancer screening covered by insurance?

Coverage varies depending on your provider and medical indication. Our team can guide you regarding documentation and claims.

  • How long does recovery take after lesion removal?

Recovery depends on the procedure. Cryotherapy usually heals within 1 – 2 weeks, or longer in certain cases. Surgical excision may require 1 – 3 weeks for full healing.
